What is a Neuromodulator?

A neuromodulator is produced by the bacterium Clostridium A. It blocks receptors which cause muscle contraction resulting in wrinkle relaxation. It has been used for many years to treat medical conditions such as cervical dystonia, TMJ, and other neuromuscular disorders.

How Does Neuromodulators Work?

As you grow older, your skin loses collagen, and it becomes less elastic. Some muscle groups become more dominant resulting in rhytids (wrinkles). Relaxing these dominant muscles with neuromodulators cause lines or winkles to essentially disappear. Areas most frequently treated are the frown lines, forehead and crow’s feet. It is also used for gummy smiles, bunny lines, vertical lip lines and goes beyond aesthetics, improving migraines and reducing sweating. The procedure is almost painless, takes about 15-20 minutes and the results last 3-5 months. With repeated treatments, the results may tend to last longer.

Potential Complications With Neuromodulators

These are uncommon but may include allergy (itch, rash, redness), bruising, numbness, headache, minor temporary eyelid droop, muscular weakness,  and infection. All botulinum toxin products may spread from the area of injection.

Swallowing and breathing difficulties can be life threatening, and there have been reports of death. Patients or caregivers should be advised to seek immediate medical care if swallowing, speech, or respiratory disorders occur.

Pre-treatment Instructions for Neuromodulators

• Do not consume alcohol for 48 hours prior.
• Do not wear make up to your appointment.
• Do not take Aspirin, Ibuprofen, St. John’s wort, or Vitamin E one week prior.

Post-treatment Instructions for Neruomodulators

• Do not lay down or exercise for the first four hours post-injection.
• Do not manipulate the area of the injection for the four hours post-injection.
• Avoid Sun exposure/heat exposure/tanning beds
• Avoid Alcoholic Beverages. If you wish to drink, please be aware that alcohol may increase the risk of bruising and bleeding.
