Microneedling

Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin-rejuvenation procedure that uses a needling device to create micro-injuries in the skin. These injuries stimulate new collagen production leaving the skin smoother, firmer, and younger looking.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that involves the use of tiny, sterile needles to puncture the skin. The goal of micro needling is to create controlled micro-injuries that trigger the body’s natural wound-healing process, promoting the production of collagen and elastin. These proteins are essential for maintaining skin elasticity and firmness.

Microneedling is commonly used to address a variety of skin concerns, including:

  1. Fine lines and wrinkles
  2. Acne scars
  3. Large pores
  4. Stretch marks
  5. Uneven skin texture
  6. Hyperpigmentation and age spots

How Does Microneedling Work?

The procedure is typically performed using a handheld device, such as a derma roller or an automated micro-needling pen. The depth of the needle penetration can be adjusted depending on the specific skin concern being treated.

Collagen is a protein that gives our skin its structure, working like a netting to hold skin cells together. It also gives skin a smooth and youthful appearance, as we have it in abundance when we are young. As we age, collagen starts to break down, which can lead to fine lines and wrinkles.

As the skin begins to repair itself, it turbo-charges the body’s natural ability to produce collagen. The tiny needles used in the procedure create microscopic channels in the dermis that stimulate that healing process.

After the treatment, the skin may be red and slightly swollen, similar to a sunburn. This usually subsides within a few days. It is essential to follow proper aftercare instructions provided by a professional, including avoiding sun exposure and using high-quality sunscreen.

For best results, microneedling is often performed in a series of sessions, spaced a few weeks apart.

Microneedling Pre-treatment Instructions

  • Keep hydrated prior to the procedure
  • Have a meal prior to the procedure
  • DO NOT consume alcohol for 48 hours prior
  • DO NOT wear make-up to your treatment as this can increase your potential to bruise
  • DO NOT take Aspirin, Ibuprofen, St. John’s wort, or Vitamin E one week prior

Microneedling Post-treatment Instructions

  • Apply 1-2 pumps of StemFacial® Serum (1). Gently massage into skin, then apply 1-2 pumps of StemFacial® Accelerator (2). Use every morning and evening.
  • Sun Exposure: Avoid direct sun for 3-5 days.
  • Sun Block (SPF 40) is mandatory and should be reapplied every 2 hours. Physical Sunblock is recommended.
  • Avoid Waxing/Laser treatments and Facial Treatments for 2 weeks.
  • Exercise or swimming: Avoid for 24 hours (Avoid perspiration).
  • No skin products other than StemFacial® and sunblock unless instructed by your skin care specialist.

  • Increase water intake to include at least 8 glasses per day.
  • Wash the treated area without a washcloth (to avoid irritation) using a gentle cleanser 3 days post-treatment.

Which Types of Skin Conditions Can Microneedling Treat?

Microneedling can be used to treat many types of skin conditions. People often get microneedling to treat acne scarring, enlarged pores, stretch marks and wrinkles. It can also be used to treat burns, burn scars, and surgical scars.

Is Microneedling Safe for All Skin Types?

Yes, people of all skin types can have microneedling done. However, you may not be eligible for microneedling if you have any of the following:

  • Acne.
  • Herpes.
  • Warts.
  • Eczema.
  • Psoriasis.
  • You are immunosuppressed.
  • You are on chemotherapy.
  • You had Botox injected recently in the treatment area.

The doctor will go over the contraindications in greater detail during your consultation.

Is There a Recovery Period After Microneedling?

Yes, there is a recovery period once your microneedling treatment is complete. During your recovery, it is normal for your skin to peel, flake, swell, and experience redness. This can last up to four days, but fully recovering from the microneedling treatment can potentially take up to 60 days. You will, however, start seeing results within the first 48 hours.

What Should I Avoid After Having Microneedling?

As you recover from microneedling treatment, there are a few things you need to avoid, so there are no complications. Any activity that would heat up your skin should always be avoided. This includes taking hot showers, doing intense exercises that make you sweat, scrubbing your skin, and entering hot tubs.

What Are The Risks Involved With Microneedling?

Microneedling can help treat skin conditions, but it is not without risks. Skin damage is the most common occurrence and is to be expected. However, it can potentially cause excessive bleeding, tightness, bruising, itching, and swelling. These typically disappear relatively quickly, but if they persist or get worse, you will need to see your doctor immediately.

Microneedling can also cause your skin to itch or sting after applying cosmetics or sunscreen. Light or dark spots could possibly appear, lines may form on the face, your lymph nodes could become swollen, and you might experience a cold sore flare up.

Something else that we need to address is that microneedling may not achieve your desired results. You may need to have multiple sessions to achieve your ideal look.
